Brev till ECOSOC

augusti 17, 2008 · 7 kommentarer

Dear representatives of the ECOSOC,

I would like to draw your attention to the behavior of an organization called “Svenska FN-förbundet” (Swedish UN Association). According to their internet-site (http://www.sfn.se) they have a consultative status within the ECOSOC. That’s the reason why I’m writing to you. If you think there’s a more appropriate receiver within the UN, please forward my email to them or inform me where to write instead.

Svenska FN-förbundet has published a report (link: http://www.sfn.se/svefn/files/CERD-rapport_20080704_final.pdf ) called “Alternative report to Sweden’s Seventeenth and Eighteenth Periodical Report to the committee on the International Convention on Ethnic and Racial Discrimination”. This report is heavily biased from a political point of view, which should be unacceptable for any organization working under UN-flag. The chairman of Svenska FN-förbundet, Alexander Gabelic, is in fact also a parliament member of the Swedish socialdemocratic party.

The political bias of the report is however just the beginning of the problem. The report blames one of the political parties, Sverigedemokraterna (Sweden Democrates), not surprising a party in opposition to the party Mr Gabelic represents, for being racistic (pages 40, 41). The implications are particularly severe, as the report requires a ban on so called racist organizations and penalizing of membership (for instance mentioned on page 6). So the report is nothing short of a threat to Sweden’s democratic system, furthermore a violation of the UN universal declaration of human rights, in particular articles 2 and 19.

On page 40 and 41, Sverigedemokraterna is called “the largest racist organization in Sweden”. Motivations given are based on false, propagandistic statements. Sverigedemokraterna has nothing to do with racism or racistic organizations. The views and opinions of the party can be read on its internet site ( http://www.sverigedemokraterna.se )

“The party was established by persons previously active in the Nazi movement and who now do what they can to shed past associations and appear mainstream.“

This is not true. The party was established in 1988 by a mix of nationalistic people. Some of them could be described as ultranationalists, others as moderate nationalists. During the 90’s, the 2 fractions fought about power. The moderate nationalists successively gained more power and eventually won, the ultranationalists either quitting or being thrown out. The leadership of the party has gone through dramatic change over the years, as has the party. The leading committee of the party has been changed numerous times. Sverigedemokraterna has developed into a party vividly honouring the fundamental principles of democracy and human rights.

“A recent survey shows that six leading figures in the party who have held office during the past two years have in various ways supported the Nazi movement by donating money to militant Nazi groups.”

This is not true. An organization called Expo investigated presumably 500-1000 current and former representatives of the party. The methods used are disputed, as they were a clear insult to the personal integrity of the investigated persons, if even legal. Expo managed to seize specifications of people’s private mobil telephone bills. Out of these several 100’s of investigated party representatives and candidates, they found 2 active members (municipality level) who had actually supported ultranationalist organizations. The 2 persons were immediately excluded from the party. The remaining 4 people are either not representing the party, or their actions (in one case: buying a book about Nazism) not considered worth any further consideration.

“In other words, the Swedish state finances the activities of parties that openly proclaim racist views”

This is a lie. Sverigedemokraterna does not accept racism. Members expressing racism are effectively thrown out of the party.

As a conclusion, Svenska FN-förbundet has used a very grave kind of propaganda against one of the Swedish political parties. This propaganda has then been used to require the party being banned.

The report from Svenska FN-förbundet is an attack on Swedish democracy. It’s an attack on the fundamentals of the universal declaration of human rights. It’s a threat to the credibility of the UN. I believe that Svenska FN-förbundet and Alexander Gabelic, as a chairman of the organization, have severely abused the UN for political purposes, and that this can not pass without consequences.

I would like the ECOSOC, or any other suitable sub-organization of the UN suggested by the ECOSOC, to investigate this case with un-biased eyes, and to keep me updated on your progress and conclusions.

Best regards

Patrik Ohlsson, elected member of the town council of the municipality of Ängelholm and chairman of Sverigedemokraterna in Ängelholm
